I best learn when I can be directly involved in what I'm learning. If it's English, have me mimic, or imitate the style. Have me actually hear the rhythm. If it's art, bring me to a museum. Have me do exercises to practice and improve. If it's math, walk me through it, get me to do practice problems, and give me real-life scenarios. If it's science, put me in a comprehensible lab. If it's philosophy, well, I don't like philosophy. You can't get involved in it because all it is is words >.>

->What are some examples of good teaching you have experienced, or the opposite?

Good teaching - my current math class. Interactive notes are taken during lecture class, practice problems are assigned, and the TA during small class walks you through any questions you have in regards to any of the practice problems or the questions on the daily exercise sheet.

Bad teaching - Ms. C. "Do this." Doesn't work. Also, Shane (Concepts teacher from last semester). "I might change it" "I might change it" "I changed it" no. Give a set of guidelines, and judge each individual as just that - an individual. Don't make an assignment a competition. Because then there are bound to be losers. And educating isn't about having winners or losers, it's about having learners.

->What is the most a teacher has ever done for you?

It hurts me to say this, but Ms. Gilley actually did the most for me. She was brutally honest and frank, and stayed human enough to talk to you outside of class. When me and Krys and Amanda were having a hard time at home and not eating, she gave me $25 to get some groceries. Now, I'm not saying teachers should hand out money like that, but the fact that she listened and was compassionate enough to do so, that's what matters.

->What can you not stand in a teacher?

Arrogance. Closed-mindedness. A refusal to consider things outside themselves. Monotony (a sense of humor, at least to some extent, is a MUST!)



As for that scholarship thingy, what's it all about? If it's the scholarships.com or fastwebscholarships, I'm already a member, so I can't help you out >.<

I learn best when someone doesn't just show me how to do it, its when they actually take the time and help me do it step by step. ITs when someone takes the time to teach me one on one....

Good teachers are the ones who learn from their students. I have encountered plenty of those in college but then there are those that are arrogent and don't know what there doing. Like My computer concepts teacher.

The most any teacher has done for me is give me a little of what they know to start and show me a new way of thinking

Arrogence, stupidity and the in ability to sit down and teach what they set out to teach.

Had to quit school because I didn't have a job and the money to continue but fear not I will return. I'm gonna get things in order first and then try again.

The first lesson that a new teacher learns when they actually get to teach is that teaching, per se, is a part of their job, and not necessarily the biggest part, depending on who is asking. If the district gives you one week to teach your students the scientific method, then requires you go to to another subject, then you have to concider those constraints when you plan your lessons. Way too often in this day of vanishing education dollars it becomes 'teach to the child that understands the subject the least,' which leaves many bright children idle at best, disciplinary problems at worst.

The best you can shoot for is to touch as many as possible, and try not to take the shortcomings of the system personally. Always understand that disillusioned teachers leave the profession on average after three years... if you are not going to be one of them, then you have to know that even if you lift one student to his/her potential, you have done more than anyone else could have done, even if the system sucks, you don't have enough time, you don't have enough books, you pay for too much stuff, and your paycheck is too small.

To teach, you have to first care.
